The human mind is a greedy meaning-making machine. Every event, every encounter, every coincidence is immediately interpreted, categorized, and transformed into a message that speaks about us. It’s a tendency that makes us human, but sometimes traps us in a web of projections and illusions. Matt Law, a young Scottish artist from Strathaven, has chosen this theme for his new single “Made Up Construct” , releasing June 26. The song doesn’t offer answers but asks the right question: why do we feel the need to turn everything into “a story about us”?
The song is a classic, direct Brit pop rock track—the kind that gets stuck in your head without asking permission. The guitar is very present in the arrangement, perfectly linking up with the melody—especially in the chorus, which stays with you after just a few listens. There’s a lightness that might make it a “summer single,” but with a particular nuance: it’s not the sunny beach song, but rather the one to listen to on a cloudy day, when the sky isn’t completely clear and there’s a subtle melancholy in the air.
Recorded at Riverside Music College, “Made Up Construct” is the first track Matt has recorded with his full band. An important milestone for a young musician who until recently played alone and has now found in his classmates—Taylor Whyte on drums, Alex Duncan on bass, Kian Carrol and Morgan Flanagan on guitars—the drive to turn his ideas into something bigger. The stated influences are The Strokes, Green Day, and Radiohead, and you can hear them: the direct energy of alternative rock, the catchiness of pop, and that subtle vein of introspection that makes it all deeper than it appears.
With several shows already at Glasgow’s Classic Grand and Ivory Blacks, Matt Law and his band are building their live presence. “Made Up Construct” is an important first step, a promising calling card. Because when an artist can talk about philosophy with a chorus that sticks in your head, it means they’ve found the right path.
