There is a moment, in an artist’s life, when they realize that what they’ve created is bigger than themselves. That their songs have taken a path they themselves hadn’t foreseen. For DownTown Mystic (aka Robert Allen), that moment came while reading reviews of the previous EP “Mystic Highway”. Critics were talking about a “soundtrack for a road trip”, about music perfect for getting in the car and leaving. Robert had never thought of that. But when he read it, he had an epiphany: why not make an EP designed specifically for summer, for travel, for the asphalt rolling under the wheels? And that’s how “Mystic Highway Road Trip” was born, six songs of classic, melodic rock, timeless yet contemporary, sounding exactly like what you’d expect from a coast-to-coast record.
The story of this EP is already an anomaly in itself. Usually, it’s the artists who inspire critics. Here, the opposite happened: it was the critics who gave the artist the idea. And DownTown Mystic seized the opportunity, recording a work that is a tribute to effective simplicity. Because simple things are the hardest to do well. And here, instead, they are done perfectly.
DownTown Mystic’s sound is American rock rooted in the greats of the past – think Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, a cross between Buffalo Springfield and Rockpile – but it never sounds like a copy. It’s vintage and modern at the same time, thanks to guitars with an analog flavor and production that feels old-school, but with an energy that speaks to the present. The songs are direct, catchy, but not trivial. There is substance, there is message. There’s that positive vein that has become DownTown Mystic’s trademark.
Supporting the project is a cast of musicians that any rock band would envy. The rhythm section is entrusted to two giants like Steve Holley (Paul McCartney, Elton John) and Paul Page (Ian Hunter, Dion). And guest stars are not lacking: harmonica player Jerry Fierro on “Live”, guitarist Lance Doss on “Losing My Mind”, and keyboardist Jeff Levine who delivers a stellar performance on “Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something 2 Somebody”. Recorded at the legendary Shorefire Studios in New Jersey, with engineer Joe DeMaio also playing guitars on “Superstar” and “Shadow Walk”, the album was mastered by another legend, Leon Zervos (Crowded House, Maroon 5, Pink) at Studios 301 in Australia.
“Mystic Highway Road Trip” is the ideal follow-up to a 2025 that saw DownTown Mystic release “The Wish” and “Mystic Highway”, and a 2026 that opened with the EP “On E Street Remix”, featuring Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from the E Street Band. A journey that has led Robert Allen to be considered one of the best sync-licensing artists in rock, with over 250 appearances in films and TV series. But here, in this EP, there is only music. The one you listen to at high volume, while the road stretches out before you. The one that makes you feel alive, even when the world around you seems to be falling apart. Because rock, when it’s real, needs no explanation. Just put it in the car and go.
