When jazz meets poetry, wonders happen. And in this case, the wonder is called Martina Lupi and manifests itself in “Dannate Salvatrici” , her debut solo album on Filibusta Records. The smooth and intense voice of the singer-songwriter – but the term “singer-songwriter” is too narrow for her – is the vehicle for an observation of the world that goes beyond the ordinary gaze. Martina is a woman who knows how to look, and not only look: she knows how to translate her visions into music, into a language that does not give itself to those who listen distractedly. This record requires time, attention, openness. It’s not easy listening. It’s slow, majestic, engaged. But those who respect it, harvest truly succulent emotional fruits.
The album is a journey, a rite of passage that starts from suffering to reach liberation, from shadow to breath, from distance to rebirth. Inspired by feminine archetypes of Jungian psychology, mythology and spirituality, “Dannate Salvatrici” explores the feminine in its deepest and often hidden declinations. Martina Lupi’s voice is the common thread of this exploration: it ventures between overtone singing, piano, electronics, violin, guitar and atmospheric textures, creating what she herself defines as the “Sound of Distance”. Not distance as absence, but as emotional matter, as fertile space in which what is far becomes close, present, alive.
Alongside Martina, musicians of great sensitivity: Alessandro Gwis on piano and electronics, Michele Gazich on violin, Mattia Lotini on guitar and bass. Together they build a sonic universe that moves between world music, contemporary singing, spiritual folk, chamber jazz and ritual sound design. It’s a musical architecture that is not afraid of silence, that transforms it into an integral part of the discourse, where every note has a specific weight, every pause a meaning.
Martina Lupi, known internationally as the founder of the world music ensemble Tupa Ruja, with this album inaugurates a new phase of her career. She has already received important awards – the Folkest Award 2022 and the Best Arrangement award at the Bruno Lauzi Author Music Award 2024 – and has performed on stages such as the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the Casa del Jazz and the Teatro Bellini, collaborating with artists such as Javier Girotto and Antonello Salis. But “Dannate Salvatrici” is something else. It is her sonic body, her soul laid bare.
The album moves between tracks like “Fiamma”, inspired by the Joan of Arc that lives in every woman, and “Fugadamé”, which confronts emotional fracture and the shadow self. “My Perfect Breath” is an invocation of healing, while “La distanza” and “Realtà non è” explore absence and impermanence. And then “Pasarero”, which closes the album with an act of spiritual migration and rebirth. Each song is a small treatise on transmutation, a “medicine music” that speaks to the body and the spirit.
“Dannate Salvatrici” is not a record to be listened to in passing. It’s a record to be inhabited. That asks you to stop, close your eyes, let yourself be carried away. Martina Lupi does not offer easy songs: she offers experiences. And in an age when everything moves fast, her invitation to slow down is perhaps the most revolutionary gesture an artist can make.
