Months after the release of Riflesso, the album that marked an important chapter for Willy Wonka Was Weird, the music video for “Sottoscala” arrives. A track that symbolically closes that journey and, at the same time, opens a new one. The song, featuring Tommaso Mantelli on bass and drums, is written by Paolo Modolo, founder of Karma Field Records and the soul of the project. Guitars, vocals and composition bear his mark, in a work that is both personal and universal.
The genesis of the piece is rooted in a painful event that deeply marked Modolo’s life and that of his family. In that moment of fracture, the memory of the basement of his childhood home resurfaced: a place that in the author’s memory represented a refuge, a shelter from the world. From that image the song was born. Not a linear story, but a crossing. The first part of the track moves between fragility, bewilderment and the difficulty of accepting one’s own limits. The second opens instead to a glimmer of hope, to the possibility that pain can become a turning point, a silent teacher that teaches how to see beyond.
Two lines return like an echo throughout the song. The first, “And you are everything I have” , is the recognition of those who stay by your side even when everything seems to be falling apart. The second, “The anxiety I have and the hurt it causes will serve a purpose” , is the moment when suffering ceases to be just a wound and becomes possibility. And it is precisely this second line, with its disarming sincerity, that becomes the identifying plate of the entire song. A statement that does not seek comfort, but accepts pain as part of the journey.
The music video, made entirely by Paolo Modolo, is a visual journey that translates the inner journey of the track into images. There is no plot, no explanation. There are symbols, suggestions, autobiographical fragments that leave room for interpretation by the viewer. It’s a video that doesn’t impose a meaning, but suggests it. That doesn’t close, but opens.
The release of the video comes at a time of great change for Modolo, both personally and artistically, and coincides with the first anniversary of Karma Field Records. For this reason, “Sottoscala” is much more than a simple music video: it’s a passage, a threshold. As Modolo himself explains: “For a long time I thought that pain was only something to fight or to use as simple artistic inspiration. Today I believe instead that it can become a teacher. If you find the courage to go through it, it doesn’t show you who you are, but who you can become. Pain doesn’t cancel hope: often it is precisely what dissolves the clouds that cover the mind, the heart, and the direction we want to follow.”
In all likelihood, “Sottoscala” is the most personal track on the entire album. Its melodic key is direct, resting on an immediate chord progression that, after a more introspective and subdued first part, opens up remarkably. It’s a song that doesn’t try to hide its wounds, but shows them with a precision that makes them universal. Willy Wonka Was Weird manages to balance emotions to communicate urgent feelings, those that can’t stay under the skin nor in your pocket. They have to be thrown out, one way or another. And the author throws them out effectively, without beating around the bush, with a precise and simple style that inevitably hits the mark. Because when music is real, it doesn’t need frills. It just needs to get where it needs to go.
